Understanding Claude Cowork Limitations

As a research preview, Cowork is still evolving. Understanding its current constraints is key to setting the right expectations for your agentic workflows.

Navigating the Feature Preview

Cowork represents a paradigm shift in autonomous AI tools. However, being in its early stages, it has specific functional boundaries.

Top 5 Cowork Constraints

  • 1. No Projects Support:

Currently, you cannot use Cowork within Claude Projects. It operates as a standalone agentic environment for local filesystem tasks.

  • 2. No Cross-Session Memory:

Claude does not retain memory or context from previous sessions. Each task starts with a fresh agentic state to ensure isolation.

  • 3. No Chat or Artifact Sharing:

Cowork sessions are private and cannot be shared with other team members or users at this time. Sharing links are not generated.

  • 4. macOS Desktop Only:

The research preview is exclusive to the macOS Claude Desktop app and does not sync with web or mobile versions of Claude.

  • 5. Session Persistence:

The desktop application must remain open for your task to proceed. Closing the app or your computer going to sleep will terminate the session immediately.

The Future Roadmap of Cowork AI

Anthropic is actively iterating on Cowork based on user feedback. These limitations are part of the early stage of the feature preview and are likely to be addressed as the tool moves toward a broader release in late 2026.
